Pioneer Woman Bloody Maria

Pioneer Woman bloody maria is an easy big-batch brunch cocktail made with tomato juice, silver tequila and fresh lime juice, ready in 15 minutes. This make-ahead bloody mary with tequila pitcher cocktail fits Cinco de Mayo, game day tailgates and lazy Sunday brunch with friends.

Mix the whole pitcher ahead and taste it before it goes in the fridge, because the horseradish and hot sauce decide how bold every glass will be. Skip the tasting and you might serve a drink that's flat or too hot for half your guests.

Swapping vodka for silver tequila and adding fresh lime juice next to the lemon gives this drink a brighter, more citrusy bite than a classic Bloody Mary. Rimming each glass with chili lime seasoning like Tajin also adds a salty, tangy kick with every sip.

A tall, spicy tomato cocktail with a bright citrus finish and a chili lime rim, mixed in one pitcher and poured over ice. Chilling the mix first lets the horseradish, hot sauce and Worcestershire blend into the juice.

Ingredients

  • 1 46-ounce bottle vegetable juice or tomato juice

  • 2 1/2 c. silver tequila

  • 1/3 c. fresh lemon juice

  • 1/3 c. fresh lime juice

  • 1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp. horseradish

  • 2 tsp. hot sauce (optional)

  • 1 tsp. celery salt

  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper

  • 1/4 c. chili lime seasoning, such as Tajin

  • 2 limes, cut into wedges

  • Ice

  • Leafy celery stalks, green olives, pickled peppers, to serve

Directions

  • Mix the pitcher: Combine 1 46-ounce bottle vegetable juice, 2 1/2 cups silver tequila, 1/3 cup lemon juice and 1/3 cup lime juice in a large pitcher. Then add 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon horseradish, 2 teaspoons hot sauce, 1 teaspoon celery salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper, stir well and taste.
  • Chill until serving: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate it until your guests are ready. That way the flavors blend and the drink stays cold without watering down.
  • Rim the glasses: Pour 1/4 cup chili lime seasoning into a shallow dish. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each tall glass, then dip the rim into the seasoning.
  • Pour and garnish: Fill each rimmed glass with ice and pour in the Bloody Maria. Finish with leafy celery stalks, green olives, pickled peppers and lime wedges.

FAQs

Can I make a Bloody Maria without alcohol?

Yes, just leave out the tequila and add a splash more lime juice so it still tastes bright. The tomato, horseradish and Worcestershire carry plenty of flavor on their own.

How far ahead can I mix the pitcher?

You can mix everything except the ice and garnishes a few hours ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Stir it again before pouring, since the horseradish and spices settle at the bottom.

Can I use tomato juice instead of vegetable juice?

Plain tomato juice works fine, and it makes the drink a little cleaner and sweeter. Vegetable juice adds a bit more savory depth, so use whichever you have on hand.

How do I make it less spicy?

Skip the optional hot sauce and start with half the horseradish, then taste before you add more. You can also rim the glasses with plain salt instead of the chili lime seasoning.

What is the most common mistake with this cocktail?

Pouring it over too little ice or serving it warm is the usual problem, since a lukewarm tomato drink tastes flat. Chill the pitcher well and fill each glass with plenty of ice.
